U.S. Capitol Tour

Below are details regarding our tour of the U.S. Capitol. Don't hesitate to reach out to me with questions. If you are unable to make it, please let me know as soon as possible.

Tour Details

I’m looking forward to seeing each of you for a behind-the-scenes tour of the U.S. Capitol.

My tours take about two hours. Timing depends on what we see, including going on the House Chamber Floor or the Speaker’s Balcony (think Reagan–O’Neill). Sometimes, the House Sergeant at Arms invites us into his office to see where the President waits before the State of the Union – and he shows us moon rocks and lets people hold the Mace (it’s not a spray!). And, sometimes, we can’t do any of those things, but it is still cool. We don’t know what we get to do until game time.

Parking in DC is difficult. I suggest people take the train and walk a few blocks to the Capitol. Here are the schedules for MARC and Amtrak.

You are scheduled on one of these days:

  • Wednesday, February 12 we will meet at 1:15 p.m.

  • Friday, February 21 we will meet at 12:55 p.m.

  • Friday, March 14 we will meet at 1:15 p.m.

We will meet outside on the East Front of the Capitol (not the Mall side, which is the West Front). When you get to the East Front, gather outside, close to the Capitol Building in the center – i.e., if you look at the Capitol you are staring straight at the Dome – the Supreme Court and the Library of Congress will be behind you.

I’ll give you a bit of history and the lay of the campus and then we will go into the Capitol Visitor Center (CVC). There are many restrictions on what you can bring in – yup, full water bottles are banned. Food, backpacks, and large handbags are also forbidden.

We will do a quick tour inside the CVC. Some highlights include an amazing picture of Lincoln’s second inaugural and the Lincoln catafalque. Then we will watch a 13-minute movie on the history of the U.S., from the point of view of Congress. Look for the image of a map showing the Potomac River right next to the White House, before it was rerouted, and ask me to tell a story about a president who went skinny dipping.

We will then head into the Capitol Building for the tour of the Crypt, a tomb that was never used, the Rotunda (count the Washingtons), Statuary Hall, and see 150-year-old blood that has stained marble steps.

Be prepared for a lot of walking and more stairs than you can imagine. Wear comfortable shoes and dress casually. There is a coat check, but we may not end up where we start, so it may be best to carry your coat.

Please let me know if you have any questions. If you are unable to attend, let me know as soon as possible as there are others I wasn’t able to accommodate.
